The fact of the matter is most headphones on the market are black. This leaves little option for girls who want to have some actual color in their headphones.
While the technical details remain similar sound-wise, the color schemes and size of headphones for girls tend to be quite different. Most of the headphones on our list are very budget friendly, so if you are a female audiophile you may want to check out some of our other posts on headphones.

Before we move onto the actual headphones themselves it would be beneficial to quickly cover some key points one should consider when buying headphones. While this information may be a review for some, I want to make sure we are all on the same page! Don’t worry if you aren’t technically inclined. I’ve written this to be as user friendly as possible. Enjoy! Any questions feel free to leave a comment down below.
In-Ear or On-Ear?
In-ear headphones are usually described as earbuds. They sit directly in the ear canal and come with both pros and cons. Over-ear headphones tend to be much larger and sit directly over the ear. Which headphones you buy will largely depend on both personal preferences and use case. In-ear headphones are much more discrete and are easily transportable.
Over-ear Headphones
In-ear Headphones
With the right set they tend to be very comfortable and can be easily worn for hours. The good also comes with the bad – the fact that they are so small makes them incredibly transportable. However, the sound quality is inferior compared to the over-ear headphones. The driver size is tiny in comparison and is unable to provide you with the definition and overall clarity as over-ear headphones.
Over-ear headphones are much bigger and therefore difficult to transport. They are also usually far less comfortable to wear for long periods of time. They also tend to be more expensive as they require more material to make. They will typically provide much more sound isolation and can be great for public transit.
- For running? I recommend in-ear headphones.
- Use at home or on public transit? I recommend over-ear headphones.
What Size Do You Need?
This is a common question for girls buying headphones. Both over-ear and in-ear headphones can have sizing problems. Girls ear-canals tend to be a little smaller than average. Therefore, common earbud sizes will consistently fall out. This is where it is crucial that you find headphones that have multiple ear tips. Make sure feel the headphone creating a little suction of air when placed in your ear. This is how you will know that the earbud is seated correctly and will perform at its optimal level. If you are especially difficult to fit, I recommend checking out custom fit earphones.
Ailihen I35
For over-ear headphones it can be difficult to find headphones that are small enough. This is where female specific headphones come in. If you know that you have an especially small head buying conventional headphones will most likely lead to fit issues. We recommend checking out the Ailihen I35 (shown above). The headband is a little narrower making them a perfect fit for most girls.
Why is this important? Having the correct fit is essential to getting the best sound quality out of your headphones. If the headphones aren’t fit correctly you may notice a drop in sound quality – particularly the bass – which you may attribute to the headphones themselves.
What About Sound Quality?
For the headphones we are recommending the sound quality won’t satisfy a picky audiophile.
However, they are good enough for the everyday listener to enjoy their music.
While the best headphone will be determined by the style of music you wish to listen to, purchasing a pair of headphones that are balanced across the entire frequency spectrum (from bass to treble) is a good decision for the average listener.
While it should still be a consideration, I don’t recommend worrying about this too much unless you consider yourself very picky with the sound.
For the most part, the average listener is not going to be able to appreciate the difference between a $100 pair of headphones and a $50 pair. It’s my opinion that you are better off getting a pair of headphones that fit, are comfortable, and that you enjoy wearing. The sound quality will be there.
If you are looking for a high performing headphone we recommend checking out the Beats (shown below). They are weighted heavily on the low-end – making them perfect for modern day music.

Other Features Most People Don’t Consider
We find that there are a number of features that most people won’t consider if they are buying their first pair of headphones. If you’ve owned a few pairs already then you’re most likely naturally aware of these important features.
- Durability
There is nothing worse than snapping the headphone of your headphones. I’ve unfortunately snapped many pairs of headphones in my ear days until I learned to focus on quality over price.
Ideally, you will have a pair of headphones where each part is replaceable. This allows you to replace individual parts without having to replace the entire headphones. Unfortunately, these headphones usually come with a price tag. Therefore, purchasing a pair of headphones that have been built with durability in mind will save you a lot of money in the long run.
- Comfort
This is huge. I’ve had pairs of headphones where I’m not able to wear them for longer than 30 minutes without my ears starting to ache. No matter how good of sound quality these headphones have I won’t put them on. $300 down the drain.
This can be avoided by first finding a pair of headphones that fit the shape of your head. Next, find headphones that have extremely comfortable ear pads. There is usually a compromise between comfort and sound isolation but if you are just using them for personal listening sound isolation isn’t as important. Headphones for girls should be slightly smaller than the average headphone to account for the smaller than average head sizes.

- Budget
Average day listener? You can get something for under $50 and be completely satisfied. If you are picky about your sound quality you need to get something at least about $100 to get the listening experience you are looking for. Most of the headphones we’ve recommended for girls are in the sub $50 category, although they still will provide a great listening experience.
Conclusion
In summary – you should be looking for a headphone that is within your budget, is comfortable, suited for you use case, and ideally is durable. Don’t worry so much about the sound quality as the technology is there for all the headphones we’ve suggested. If you are an average listener there is nothing wrong with selecting a headphone that you think looks better then the rest. Just make sure it checks off as many of the above features as possible.
