Best waterproof earbuds

While the technology isn't perfect yet, there are a few companies that are offering great options for those looking for waterproof headphones. If you've ever gotten to the point of swimming for an hour you've probably come to the conclusion that it can be quite boring at times (although also relaxing). I know I've dreamed of the day when I would be able to confidently bring a set of headphones with me to the pool. Well, now we feel confident enough to start recommending a few of the best waterproof headphones on the market.

Not all of the headphones on our list are rated for swimming. It's actually quite common for people to destroy their headphones from sweat damage during workouts. This is where the semi-waterproof headphone comes in. Rated for splashes of water, they will prevent any moisture from entering your headphones and shorting out the electrical equipment inside. Fortunately, both types of headphones are tailor made for their respective activities. Let's see how they hold up!

We'll quickly discuss a few issues surrounding waterproof headphones and then get straight to the reviews!

Considerations For Selecting The Most Waterproof Earbuds

Dealing with waterproof headphones isn't something that a lot of you will have experience with. For many of you, it will be the first time dealing with terms such as IPX-7 or IPX-8. Don't let this intimidate you! The selection of waterproof earbuds doesn't have to be complicated. Let's first discuss a few features you'll need for both swimming and working out.

  • Water Tight Seal
This is very important for swimming. You may think that the headphone itself is the only thing that needs to be waterproof, but it's integral for the inside of the ear canal to be sealed off. This allows for a pocket of air to remain and transfer the sound naturally. If any water breaches this seal, your audio will become distorted. There are a few companies that offer swimming specific earbuds to ensure this seal is water tight.
  • Waterproof Rating
Each product will be given a waterproof rating based upon American standards. The system that is typically used uses a number rating system that is preceded by IPX. We'll focus on the two main offerings IPX-7 and IPX-8. To keep things simple, IPX-7 can be considered 'water resistant'. Specifically, it can be submerged no more than 1 meter for less than 30 minutes. A true waterproof headphone will have an IPX-8 rating. This rating states you can use the headphones for extended periods of time with depths no greater than 3 meters.
Best waterproof earbuds

Even though the technology has improved, you shouldn't expect audiophile quality sound while you are swimming. The swimming pool is a tricky environment to bring sound. The water dynamics and noise isolation from the act of swimming makes it difficult to have a relaxing audio experience. Nevertheless, the audio quality is decent enough to be enjoyed on those long swims. At the very least, you will be able to enjoy your favorite podcast or audiobook.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • IPX-8 for swimming
  • Most have advanced sealing earbuds for swimming
  • IPX-7 fine for sweat and weather resistance

Our Top Picks For The Most Waterproof Headphones

SENSO Bluetooth Headphones

82 %
Rating
SENSO Bluetooth Headphones
  • Bluetooth 4.1
  • 8-hour battery life
  • On-ear controls
  • Only IPX-7

FEATURES:

  • IPX-7 waterproof rating
  • 8-hour battery life with 1.5-hour charge
  • Bluetooth 4.1
  • On-ear controls
  • 1-year warranty
SENSO Bluetooth Headphones

The first and most budget friendly option on our list. The SENSO Bluetooth Headphone is another IPX-7 rated headphone. Meaning it's great for the gym or outdoors, but cannot be used for swimming. It uses the latest Bluetooth 4.1 technology and boasts an impressive 8-hour battery life.

The Bluetooth can extend up to 30 ft. It also uses a flat, tangle-resistant cable. They give you a number of silicon tip options to fit different ear sizes. The behind the ear design helps prevent the earbuds from falling out during your workouts or hikes.

Similar to the more expensive competitors, the SENSO Bluetooth Headphones provide you with on-ear controls.  This lets you control the music without having to dig out your device. You are also able to use the built-in mic to take calls hands-free.

While the sound quality isn't terrible, you aren't getting audiophile quality. It's perfect for using at the gym, not for listening to your record player at home.

  • Great overall value. Gives similar features to headphones double the price!

Bottom Line: A great value headphone for the gym or the outdoors. Not to be used for swimming.

Pyle PSWP6BK

Rating
Pyle PSWP6BK
  • IPX-8
  • Poor build quality

FEATURES:

  • IPX-8 waterproof rating
  • 4 GB built-in memory
  • On-ear controls
Pyle PSWP6BK

The Pyle PSWP6BK is the only headphone on our list that is a standalone music player. It comes with 4GB of built-in flash memory where you can store your audio. However, you are only able to access the audio in a linear fashion (playlists only). They are IPX-8 waterproof. This means you can use them for swimming lengths at the pool.

Even though the specs aren't bad, and getting a standalone audio player for the under $40 price point is respectable, it seems Pyle has had to make some sacrifices on build quality. The ratings on this product are so poor that we are very hesitant to recommend it. There have been numerous accounts of the product failing in a short period of time.

While we like the concept, we recommend you skip unless you are very attracted by the standalone option. We should also mention that there have been just as many people who have been satisfied with the product, but we still think it's too much of a risk to recommend.

  • Skip this unless you absolutely want the standalone option.

Bottom Line: The only standalone option. Build quality is lacking. Not recommended.

Swimbuds SPORT Waterproof Headphones

Swimbuds SPORT Waterproof Headphones
  • IPX-8
  • Durable
  • Multiple earbud options
  • Requires waterproof MP3 player

FEATURES:

  • IPX-8 waterproof rating
  • 4 different styles of earbuds
  • Short cord for swimming

Swimbuds SPORT Waterproof Headphones

The Swimbuds SPORT Waterproof Headphones have been specifically designed to work well as swimming headphones. They will be a great option if you already have or are willing to buy a waterproof MP3 player. They pass the IPX-8 rating and have a solid build quality.

They offer you the most earbud options (4 different types) so you can get the best sound isolation underwater. The tree tip option is amazing for swimming as it creates a leakproof seal with great sound isolation. The seal in very important for using headphones underwater. You want the air chamber between the ear canal and headphone in order to pass sound in a natural way.

They also have a short cord designed specifically to be used for swimming (also includes a 1m extension).

The sound quality isn't spectacular, but it's good enough for swimming. Don't expect to have thumping bass or crystal clear treble.

  • A great option for swimming. You must have your own waterproof MP3 player.

Bottom Line: One of the best options for swimming. The earbud options are essential for creating the watertight seal required for transmitting audio. Mediocre sound quality.

Plantronics BackBeat

Plantronics BackBeat
  • 8-hours battery life
  • On-ear controls
  • Only IPX-7

FEATURES:

  • IPX-7 waterproof rating
  • 8-hours of battery life
  • On-ear controls
Plantronics BackBeat

The Plantronics BackBeat is our second Bluetooth option. It is only IPX-7 rated. This makes it only suitable for working out. While the actual specs are up to the industry standard, the price is actually quite high for what it offers. You'll notice very similar specs when you compare with the SENSO Bluetooth Headphones.

Where these do distinguish themselves is in fit. They stay locked into your ears. This is a hugely important feature when working out. As many of you have probably experienced, it's very annoying to have to repeatedly adjust your headphones while running on the treadmill.

The one downside to the unique fit is that it doesn't provide the best sound isolation. They have been designed so you can hear your surround environment, which can be a great safety feature, but costs you on the sound quality.

If you have trouble finding headphones that fit this will be a great option for you.

  • Perfect for those looking for a headphone that won't fall out during workouts.

Bottom Line: While the main features are nothing to write home about, the unique fit of these headphones makes worth recommending.

HydroActive Waterproof Headphones

Still having trouble keeping your headphones in while you swim? Here is the solution. These headphones were designed specifically for staying in your ears while you swim. They are similar to the Swimbuds SPORT Waterproof Headphones with the addition of the headband. They still offer the four unique earbud styles to ensure you get the tightest seal possible.

We can't stress enough the importance of having a water-tight seal on your headphones if you are going to be using them for swimming. Any water leakage and the sound will become distorted, negating any potential of actually having a good listening experience.

The sound quality is competitive with the best swimming headphones on the market, although we see a lot of room for improvement in this department.

Just to be sure: you are going to need to buy a separate waterproof MP3 player if you are going to use these headphones.  The benefit of the wrap around headband is it gives you something to clip your MP3 player on besides your goggles.

  • Having trouble keeping your headphones in underwater? Get these.

Bottom Line: A great option for swimming. If you have had trouble keeping your headphones in, or find that they are leaking, these will be a good fit!
